How To Get What You Want By Asking For It

When you have to ask for something you want, do you assume the other person will say "No"? Maybe you are asking for a pay rise or time off for a family event like kids' sporting days. You could be asking that girl or a guy out on a date. The fear that the other person will reject our request can paralyze most people into accepting their current situation and never taking the leap into what could be possible.

Ask Yourself – What Is The Worse That Can Happen

Our fear of rejection can paralyze us into not asking the question. Before you talk with your boss about that raise or promotion or ask that wonderful girl on a date, think through the potential outcomes. Take a moment to ask yourself, 'What is it about the situation that is causing fear and anxiety?' What is the worst that could come out of this situation? Now ask yourself if you can handle it if the worst does occur, and what the likelihood of the worst actually happening.

When we think through the situation we are afraid of, it is often not as bad as we first thought. When thinking about it, we usually realize we can handle the worst if it occurs. Most times, the worst actually never happens. Often, it is just embarrassment we fear, worrying about what others will think. Learn from the situation. A no is not the end of your dream; it is just a detour on the road of life as you journey toward your goals.

In a job situation - the worst is that the boss says no, which leaves us where we started. Can you handle that? If the girl says no, at least you know where you stand. Once you know the outcome, you can then assess your options and how you will move forward.

But what if your boss offers you a raise or a promotion? What if the girl says yes? Then you have what you asked for and are moving toward your dream. Never say someone's No for them. If you say no for them by not asking, you lose every chance of moving forward and achieving your dreams. Possibilities come when you take the chances and opportunities that come your way. So go ahead -ask the question!
