When life throws challenges your way, you can quickly hit survival mode. Your life becomes focused on just getting through the day. Beyond that, you don’t have the time or energy for anything more. These situations present excellent opportunities for personal growth (though you may not feel like it). When we are challenged, we have the chance to rise to the occasion. During upheaval, our minds become busy, and we start thinking more. It’s a great time to take advantage of a mind made flexible by circumstances and learn something new.
The act of bettering yourself gives you focus, something you can control right now, helping your mental state. It’s all about attitude and the idea that you can keep growing, even when things aren’t going well.
Here are five steps you can take to overcome the challenge and grow:
1. Learn to Embrace Adversity
There’s no doubt upheaval can make a mess of your life. But you will discover something about yourself if you dig in and start looking for solutions. Adversity can bring out your best, forcing you out of complacency to find new solutions. With an open-minded attitude, you can even come to embrace adversity.
2. Become More Adept at Challenges
A crisis demands creative solutions. After all, if the status quo had been working, you wouldn’t be where you are now. Challenging situations give you an opportunity. In the long run, this means you’re going to get better at brainstorming and finding solutions where you hadn’t previously.
3. Look Past the Challenge and See the Opportunity
Every challenge presents an opportunity to see the world differently. Times of upheaval can help us see things we may have missed. If you can maintain an openness to trying new things and adaptability when facing challenges, you will see new opportunities to grow and move forward.
4. Cultivate Positivity
It is difficult to make it through a crisis if you only focus on the negative. Take a few minutes to list ten positive things in your life. Now, create a list of five positive things about your challenging situation. This will help you discover the ability to find the positive and keep an upbeat attitude even when things are going wrong. Following this process, whenever things go a little the wrong way, will help you stay positive no matter what life throws at you.
5. Develop More Empathy
Going through tough times helps us learn empathy. Challenging situations help us grow compassion for those around us. Compassion and empathy toward others will return to you during your next difficult situation. It builds stronger relationships, which strengthen us as we go through life.
Many of these steps can be challenging and go against how we feel when going through difficult times. Following the steps above will build your emotional strength. Imagine the newer, stronger version of yourself developing even now. How exciting to think you’ll be coming out of this crisis more robust and better than ever!
